Rapid Palatal Expander
The expander works by using the teeth as anchors to widen the upper jaw. This appliance is typically activated over the course of several weeks, and it is usually stays in place for 3-6 months to hold the separation. Often times a space will develop between the two front teeth, but this will come together after the expansion is complete.
